Mumbai, January 5, 2024 — A major milestone in India's infrastructure development is on the horizon as Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) on January 12. This engineering marvel, now India's longest and the world's 12th longest sea bridge, spans a distance of 22 km and is poised to significantly transform the connectivity landscape of Mumbai.
The ambitious project, which commenced in 2018, faced an eight-month delay attributed to the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic. However, the completion of the MTHL marks a significant achievement for the city's infrastructure development.
The bridge, connecting Sewri in south Mumbai to Chirle on the outskirts of Navi Mumbai, is expected to play a crucial role in alleviating traffic congestion and enhancing overall connectivity in the region. With toll rates yet to be determined, preliminary estimates suggest a range of ₹250-300 for passenger cars, with potentially higher rates for freight traffic.
Anticipated to accommodate approximately 70,000 vehicles daily, the six-lane MTHL is designed for a maximum speed of 100 kmph, allowing commuters to cover the 22 km distance in just 15 minutes. This reduction in travel time is expected to significantly ease congestion and enhance the efficiency of transportation in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is the implementing authority for the MTHL project, with funding support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The ₹17,843 crore investment underscores the commitment to enhancing the city's infrastructure and fostering economic development.
As the MTHL prepares to welcome its first commuters, expectations are high for the bridge to emerge as a vital artery in Mumbai's transportation network, symbolizing progress and efficiency for the bustling metropolis.
